State College, Pa. - September 18, 2000 - Penn State men's soccer player Derek Potteiger (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) has been named the Big Ten Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the week ending Sept. 16. Potteiger, a junior midfielder for Penn State, scored both game-winning goals in the Nittany Lions' two wins over the weekend. Potteiger scored early in overtime of PSU's 2-1 win against Charleston on Friday night in the Penn State Nike Classic. He then scored the game's only goal in the Nittany Lions' 1-0 win over No. 9 Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday. Penn State claimed the tournament title. The Nittany Lions are 6-0 on the year and ranked No. 2 in the nation in the Sept. 18 NSCAA Coaches Poll. Potteiger, a returning first team All-Big Ten pick, leads Penn State with 11 points off five goals and an assist. The Nittany Lions return to action this week with a road match at Michigan.
