State College, Pa. - January 19, 2001 - Penn State Nittany Lion soccer player Pete Shellenberger (Lancaster, Pa.) was the top player selected in the 2001 National Professional Soccer League's Territorial Draft. Shellenberger was taken by the Harrisburg Heat as the first player in the NPSL's territorial draft back on Jan. 10. The territorial draft took place prior to the league's amateur draft. For a player to be picked as a territorial selection, he must have a permanent residence in the state or province in which the team plays, attended college in that state or have been born in that state. A four year letterman and starter for PSU, Shellenberger was second on this year's 13-6-2 Penn State squad with 12 points off four goals and four assists. He ended his stellar career with 31 points off ten and 11. Shellenberger was a multiple All-Big Ten pick for Penn State as well.
