STATE COLLEGE, Pa.; April 17, 2007 ¨C The Penn State Nittany Lion lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 7-5 decision at No. 12 Bucknell in non-conference action in Lewistown, Pa. Head coach Glenn Thiel¡¯s Lions fell behind 3-2 after the first period and could never quite catch the streaking Bison. Junior Bubba Scott (Rockville, Md.) and sophomore Rob Forster (Jenkintown, Pa.) led Penn State with two goals each in the game. Scott got the scoring started early, giving Penn State a 1-0 lead with a goal at the 13:18 mark, taking an assist from senior Pat Heim (Wayne, Pa.). But Bucknell answered quickly with a Brian Gargan unassisted score at the 11:54 mark, tying the contest at 1-1. Nittany Lion sophomore Forster gave Penn State another lead, its last of the game, with an unassisted goal at the 9:57 mark. But Bucknell¡¯s Gargan scored the last two goals of the first period, one off a Tim Brandau assist with 6:37 to play and one unassisted with 5:05 on the clock. The quick two-goal flurry gave Bucknell a 3-2 lead after one period. Bison Tim Brandau scored one of only two goals scored in the second period, taking a Gargan assist at the 8:49 mark and putting BU up 4-2. But Scott answered for Penn State with his second goal of the game, this one off a Brian Boyle (Derry, N.H.) pass. The score came with 4:35 left in the opening half and sent the game into intermission with Bucknell leading 4-3. The third period also featured only two goals. Bucknell¡¯s Brandau got the first, taking a pass from Steve Case and scoring at the 12:55 mark to give the Bison a 5-3 lead. Heim answered with an unassisted goal for Penn State, cutting the BU lead to 5-4 with just 3:58 to play in the third period. But in similar fashion to the second and third periods, Bucknell stretched its lead to two quickly to start the fourth period. Austin Winter scored at the 11:21 mark, taking an assist from Greg Sowyrda and giving the Bison a 6-4 lead. Forster closed the gap back to one with an unassisted goal with 10:20 left to play. But the Bison defense stiffened and Winter added an insurance goal for BU with 5:25 left, scoring the game¡¯s final goal and helping secure a 7-5 win for BU. Nittany Lion goalie Drew Adams (Springfield, Pa.) had nine saves in the game while Bucknell¡¯s Nick Sciubba had 12 against Penn State¡¯s s17 shots on goal. The game was even offensively, with BU holding a slight 27-26 edge in shots. Penn State won 11 of 16 face-offs, led by Devin Madden¡¯s (Kensington, Md.) eight for 13 performance. Penn State falls to 4-6 overall and is 3-2 in ECAC play. The Bison move to 11-2 on the year. The Nittany Lions will trek to ECAC foe Rutgers on Sunday for a 12 p.m. contest with the Scarlet Knights.
