MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., March 23, 2002 - Penn State men's gymnasts junior Kevin Donohue (Saddle River, N.J.) and sophomore Kevin Tan (Fremont, Calif.) won top individual honors at the event finals of the Big Ten Championships on Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion in Minneapolis, Minn. Donohue won the parallel bars and high bar title, while Tan was a winner on rings.

All-around champion Raj Bhavsar of Ohio State won the floor (9.875) and tied with Michigan's Jamie Hertza to take top honors on horse with a 9.400.

Minnesota's Eric Steele edged out Donohue on vault with a 9.425 to take home the individual title.

Donohue becomes the first Nittany Lion since Mike Dutka multiple Big Ten titles. Dutka won the horse, vault and floor titles in 1998, while also taking top honors in the all-around. After finishing second in the all-around during the team competition, Donohue posted a 9.1250 on parallel bars and a 9.4375 on high bar to win both events. He also placed in the top six on three other events. He was second on vault (9.4125), third on floor (9.400) and fifth on horse (9.125).

For the second-consecutive year, a Nittany Lion won the rings title. Tan posted a 9.600 to keep the title in State College. Chris Lakeman won the rings crown a year ago in Rec Hall. Tan has not been beaten on the event in eight meets and 11 overall, including winning the apparatus on both nights of the conference championships. He earned a 9.550 and tied for first on the first night of competition to help Penn State to a third-place finish. Tan also placed sixth on parallel bars with a 9.0375.

Juniors Matt Abboud (Dayton, Maine) and Duke Van Vleet (Safety Harbor, Fla.) and freshman Ludwig Kern (Annapolis, Md.) also participated on the second day of competition. Abboud earned a top-six performance on parallel bars, placing fifth with an 8.755. He also finished eighth on floor and horse.

Van Vleet earned a third-place showing on high bar with an 8.975, while Kern was ninth at 9.7625.

Both Donohue and Tan represented Penn State on the All-Big Ten team which was announced at the end of the evening.

Ranked No. 1 for three weeks in a row entering the Big Ten Championships, Penn State will look to the NCAA Championships on April 4-6 in Norman, Oklahoma.
