Penn State Head Coach Ed DeChellis
Q: Jamelle Cornley's performance tonight
A: I thought he came out a little slow. He was really trying to get himself loose. His hip really bothered him, obviously. He just had a great performance tonight with 13 rebounds, 20 points, and four assists. I thought everybody really played well, played with a lot of heart. I thought Geary really did a great job in the first half carrying us, got some big rebounds and kept the ball out of Haluska's hands at the end of the game. Mike Walker made big shots. Mooch did a great job shooting the ball in the first half, had six rebounds, and he always comes in and makes his free-throws. It was a great team effort.
Q: How much relief do you feel coming out with a win tonight?
A: I'm just happy for our guys. They really worked hard; they stayed together, they've stayed positive, we haven't splintered. You know we've had our chances and things haven't gone particularly well. I think we've been really resilient all year and I'm very, very proud of them.
Q: Mike Walker said the basketball god's were on your side today, what do you think?
A: Yeah, we wanted to foul Henderson at the end of the game. We had a foul to give and you know that was the thing going into the last play is we wanted them to run 10, 12 seconds off the clock, then foul him and make them take the ball out front again so they never got in a rhythm. But, we never got to him, which was a little hiccup on our part. He should've never got the shot off. We should've nailed him out there when he lost the ball a little bit. You know, things have gone against a lot too, so yeah, maybe somebody was looking out for us.
Q: Why did you play man on the last possession?
A: I don't want a shot to beat us. I don't want to lose a game on a three. If they make a basket then, well, they make a basket. I wasn't going to have them pull up for a three with nobody there. Geary had Haluska and kept him from getting the basketball and I wanted somebody else to beat us, if they were going to beat us.
Q: How proud are you of the team and how they came out tonight?
A: It's been very hard and our kids. I thought we had great practices. We had a good shoot-around today - the kids were loud and bouncy. It hasn't been easy, but, as I mentioned, I think they have been very resilient. I think they stayed together, they hung together, and they battled tonight and some good things happened for us. I'm just happy for them. There was so many times when we walked in that locker room with a tear on the road, when we had a chance and didn't finish off. Today we finally finished it off.
Q: What did the doctor's tell you about Cornley's availability?
A: They made a little hip thing for him. He's going to be sore tomorrow. He won't do anything tomorrow, but he's a tough kid. He toughs it out. We just tried to use him sparingly in practice yesterday. I thought he started a little slow at first. When we first took a timeout I said to him "are you good to go, are you ok?" He said "yeah, I'll be okay, just let me get loose." And darn, he was more than okay.
Q: Joonas playing at the end and Hassell not?
A: Just free-throw shooting and it worked out for us. Joonas is a very good free-throw shooter. I thought he played with some energy and some bounce. He was big in there. He didn't defensive rebound the way I wanted him to, but Brandon didn't have a defensive rebound and rebounds are going to be really big down the stretch. And I thought Geary and Jamelle got those rebounds down the stretch.
Q: When they started hitting threes in the second half, what was going through your mind?
A: Well, we didn't find No.1(Adam Haluska) and he's a good player. He made a big one towards the end of the game too. They didn't shoot the ball very well in the first half, but they shot the ball well in the second half. Sometimes you live with that. We tried changing defenses to try to keep them off balance a little bit. They're a good basketball team and they're going to make shots and people are going to make shots. Tonight we were able to make one more.
Iowa Head Coach Steve Alford
Opening Statement: They made some better plays than we did. I was very disappointed in the way we guarded. I thought our offense did some very good things tonight; we got some good shots. We scored enough points on the road, but we just couldn't guard. When you can't guard, you leave yourself up for defeat, and that is what happened tonight.
Q: Discussing the last sequence, what were you trying to do?
A: Obviously, we weren't trying to dribble out the clock. We just did not attack the way we wanted to attack. We stood and watched, and I think it goes farther than that. You have to get defensive stops, and we could not do that. We gave up 33 in the first half, and around 40 in the second half. You just cannot give up that many points and expect to win on the road.
Q: Was giving up a few key offensive rebounds an issue for you?
A: There is no question. We have made some improvement in the rebounding category. We went with four guards exclusively tonight because I felt our guards were into the game. Our guards were doing a lot more positive things than what our bigs were doing. It was not a good night by our bigs. I thought our guards gave us just about everything they could give us.
Q: Regarding Adam Haluska¡
A: He is a great player. Adam is a terrific player. He is a first team all Big Ten selection, and he proved it again tonight, and probably solidified himself as the leader in the big ten in scoring. We can score as many points as we want, but if we cannot stop at the other end, it is hard to get wins.
Q: Did the man-to-man defense by PSU at the end throw you guys?
A: No, it was a good call by Ed (Dechelis). We told them the 1-3-1 match-up, and then when we saw the man-to-man, we went to our different series. Everyone on the floor knew what we wanted to run. They got a key deflection, if anything. They did a good job with that.
Q: Is it stating the obvious that you are going to have to win the Big Ten tournament to go to the NCAA?
A: I don't know. Going 10-6, it is hard to figure out what is going to happen. All we can do is play one game at a time. We did not take advantage of this opportunity. I thought Penn State did a lot of good things and made a lot of threes on our defense tonight. They out-rebounded us. They did what it took to get the win. Now we have to bounce back. We have a major game on Saturday. We need to get a win to get to 9-7 and be in a log-jam with a lot of teams with that record. We need to have some kind of momentum going into the Big Ten tournament.
Q: What effect did Geary Claxton have on the last play of the game?
A: I'll have to look at film. They did a nice job with that. We just did not get the ball entered where we wanted to on that last possession. I would have to look at tapes to see exactly what (Geary) Claxton did. We were looking for Adam (Haluska).
Q: Regarding the first 4 minutes of the game¡
A: I don't know if we were tight or what. Penn State came at us pretty good, and we missed a couple of shots early. We are not expected to make all of our shots, and we did not make many shots to start the game, but we also did not get many stops.
