UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-Penn State senior Michael Campo was named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-America First Team it was announced Friday by Collegiate Baseball. The publication released first, second and third teams.
Currently in the midst of a 36-game hitting streak, Campo has been a consistent and dominant player for the Lions. The Absecon, N.J., native leads the team in batting average (.442), runs (76), hits (103), triples (five) and stolen bases (17). He was also a first-team all-Big Ten selection and named the league's Player of the Year.
"He's most deserving of any award," said head coach Joe Hindelang. "It's only fitting...I think when you look at his numbers that speaks for itself. Coaches and anyone who votes knows the hard work and consistency with his hitting steak and everything that's written about him. Baseball has a lot of failures and he's handled it very well. I'm delighted for him."
In 1997, Campo was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America team.
Campo is the first Nittany Lion to earn first-team honors since 1976 and fourth overall. Pitcher Ed Drapcho (1957) and second basemen Larry Fegley (1960) and Greg Vogel (1976) were the previous first-team selections. Penn State has also had four second-team selections and a third-teamer.
Appearing in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 24 years, the Lions are the No. 3 seed in the Rutgers Regional. They will face second-seeded North Carolina on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
