Nittany Lions Drop Two Close Games Against Michigan

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (May 21, 2005) - Penn State couldn't get to Michigan closer Derek Feldkamp all day as the Nittany Lion baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader, 5-4 and 4-2, Saturday at Beaver Field.

The two losses dropped Penn State out of the Big Ten playoff hunt with a 28-26 overall record, but a 13-18 mark in the conference.

The Nittany Lions will honor five seniors prior to the start of Sunday's season finale against the Wolverines, which begins at 1 p.m. That game can be heard live on State College's ESPN Radio WMAJ 1450 AM, and a link to listen will be available at www.GoPSUsports.com.

Matt Carroll (Philadelphia, Pa.), Clint Eury (Butler, Pa.), Arin Gelletly (Dayton, Md.), Michael Milliron (DuBois, Pa.) and Josh Palm (Conneaut Lake, Pa.) will all don the Penn State uniform for the final time on Sunday.

Feldkamp pitched 6.0 scoreless innings on Saturday, earning his fifth save in Game 1, and then improving to 9-3 on the year with the win in Game 2.

Milliron tied a career-best 16-game hitting streak with two hits in Game 1, but that streak was snapped in Game 2. Sophomore Matt Lewis (Arnold, Md.) went 2-for-3 on the day with two walks, three RBI and a run scored. Junior Lance Thompson (Brisbin, Pa.) had two hits in each game, and sophomore Jim Leitgeb (Elkton, Md.) went 3-for-4, scored a run and had an RBI in Game 1.

Michigan (29-15, 16-12 Big Ten) scored one run in the first inning, and two more in the second inning of Game 1. But Penn State responded with one run in each of the first three innings to keep it close.

A passed ball, and then a sacrifice fly by Matt Butler gave the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. But four straight singles, including an RBI single by Lewis tied it in the bottom of the first inning.

Doug Pickens' two-run home run gave Michigan a 3-1 lead, Leitgeb answered with an RBI single in the bottom half of the inning. Penn State would tie it at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly by Lewis in the third inning.

Back-to-back two-out doubles by Brad Roblin and A.J. Scheidt gave the Wolverines a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning, but Penn State responded once againon an RBI double by Lewis in the next half inning.

However, Nittany Lions reliever Palm walked Chris Getz to lead off the sixth inning and it cost Penn State. A fielding error moved Getz all the way to third base, and he eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Butler, which should have been the third out of the inning.

Penn State couldn't muster another run against Feldkamp, who tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in the game, giving up just one hit.

The Nittany Lions took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of Game 2, but Feldkamp allowed Michigan to score four unanswered runs by pitching 4.0 scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out one.

A two-out infield single by Thompson started the Penn State rally in the third inning. Lewis followed with a walk, and Gelletly and junior Colin Runt (State College, Pa.) followed with back-to-back RBI singles.

A leadoff double by Pickens led to an RBI single by Butler in the fourth inning. An RBI groundout plated Roblin, and a wild pitch scored A.J. Scheidt in the fifth inning. And an RBI single by Roblin plated Butler in the sixth inning.

Feldkamp didn't allow a base-runner to get past second base in his 6.0 innings of work.
