State College, Pa. -- Penn State freshman track standout Deshaya Williams (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) took first place in the discus in two prestigious international meets this summer. In late June, Williams threw the discus 174 feet to win the Junior Nationals at the University of North Texas. A 173-foot toss at the University of South Florida in mid-July took top honors at the Under 19 Pan American meet. Williams uncorked a 178-8 throw to finish sixth and earn All-America honors at the NCAA Championships in Boise, Idaho. She was the Big Ten runner-up in the discus (172) and finished sixth in the shot put at the conference's outdoor championships at Purdue in May.
