Austin, Texas, June 10, 2004 - Penn State senior Matt Moyer (Glenside, Pa.) posted a solid throw of 223-7 in his first NCAA javelin appearance Thursday but came up just one foot shy of reaching the javelin finals at the 2004 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Texas. Moyer posted his mark on his first attempt and was sitting in fifth after the first flight of competition but had to watch as just enough men passed him in the second flight to bump him to a 13th place finish. The top 12 marks advance to Saturday's javelin final. Western Kentucky's Kristo Galeta just edged Moyer with a throw of 224-7 to finish 12th. Boise State's Gabriel Wallin brought the top mark into the finals with a throw of 254-8. Moyer ends his Penn State career as a four-time Big Ten scorer in the event, having finished third in 2004, and holding the fourth best throw in Nittany Lion history with his 230-3 effort at the 2004 NCAA East Regional. Penn State sophomore Dane Miller was due to compete in the qualifying round of the shot put starting at 9:30 p.m. (ET) Thursday night. Penn State senior All-American Chavous Nichols, the East Region triple jump champion, is also still to compete. Triple jump competition begins at 9:30 p.m. (ET) on Friday night.
