Philadelphia, Pa.- The Penn State women's track team gave another strong showing in week two of their outdoor season, taking home six first place finishes and 20 top five performances at the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia on Sunday. All-American Connie Moore (Soph., Chicago, Ill.) led the charge with two first place finishes. Moore won the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.19 seconds, then took the 200 meters with a time of 24.93 seconds. Teammate Laurie Fox (Fort Collins, Colo.) took fourth place in both of these events, finishing with times of 12.79 in the 100 meters and 25.99 in the 200 meters. The sophomore then won the 400-meter dash in a time of 5.24. Toyin Augustus (Sr., Huntsville, Ala.) took first place honors in the 100-meter hurdles with a time 14.17 seconds. In the distance events Susanne Heyer (Sr., Leipzing, Germany) took fourth place in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:39.26. Beth Sharkey (So., Hazelton, Pa.) and Jess Riden (Fr., Reedsville, Pa.) finished in third and fourth places in the 5,000-meter run with times 17:55.10 and 17:58.20 respectively. The Lions also added to their impressive win totals in the relays, winning the 4x100 relay with a time of 46.90 seconds. Penn State turned it on in the jumps and throws, with a number of big finishes. Jen Aylward (Jr., Royersford, Pa.) took first in the high jump with a leap of 1.68 meters. Freshman Sara Dougherty (Springfield, Pa.) earned a fourth place finish in the pole vault with a jump of 3.21 meters. Christin Doblin (Jr., Pottsville, Pa.) took fourth place in the long jump, leaping 5.33 meters. Jess Kern (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) had a fourth place finish in the triple jump with an 11.30 meter performance. Ja'Nai O'Conner (Fr., South Brunswick, N.J.) and Lexi Benamati (Fr., Clymer, Pa.) took second and third in the shot put with throws of 13.70 and 12.77 meters. Junior Robbin Shomper (Halifax, Pa.) took fourth in the hammer throw with a toss of 43.86 meters. Rounding out Penn State's impressive performances was Brianne Johnson (Soph., Harrisburg, Pa.) whose throw of 45.28 meters was good for second place in the javelin. Next week is a busy one for Penn State as they head to Knoxville, Tennessee for the Sea Ray Relays. The Lions will also send a small contingent of athletes to Los Angeles, California for the Mt. Sac Relays.
