Women's Cross Country Sweeps Top Seven Spots In Season-Opening Win At UNH
Sept. 7, 2001 DURHAM, N.H. -- The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams each won their season opener at the University of New Hampshire on Friday, September 7 in Durham, N.H. The PC men (25 points) defeated the UNH Wildcats (32) by capturing five of the top 10 spots. The Friars were paced by senior All-American Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand), who won the race in a time of 24:36. Finishing right on Thorpe's heels was his junior teammate, Adam Sutton (Preston, England), who finished in 24:37. Also scoring for the Friars were senior Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland), who finished fourth with a time of 24:57, senior Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland), who was eighth in 25:22, and freshman Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.), who finished 10th in 25:46. The women's team (15 points) also defeated UNH (63 points) by sweeping the top seven spots at the finish line. Leading the way for the Friars was senior Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.), who won the race in a time of 19:05. The next four PC runners all finished within hundreds of seconds of each other. Leading this group was junior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland), who finished second with a time of 19:16. Following McGettigan was senior All-American Heather Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.), who finished third in 19:16. Also scoring was sophomore Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.), who was fourth in 19:16 and senior Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland), who finished fifth in 19:16. The PC Cross Country teams will compete next at the Boston College Invitational, September 15 at Franklin Park in Boston.
