NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The eighth-ranked Providence College men's cross country team and the eighth-ranked Providence women's cross country team each earned a third-place finish at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship on October 26 at Van Cortlandt Park in New York, N.Y. Notre Dame (49 points) won the men's race and Georgetown (36 points) captured the women's race.

Running without two of their top runners, senior Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) and junior Adam Sutton (Preston, England), the men's squad (54 points) finished just five points behind Notre Dame and just two points behind second-place Villanova (52 points). Senior Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand) was PC's top male finisher as he placed third in a time of 24:28 to earn All-BIG EAST accolades. Senior Dermot Galvin of Kilrush, Ireland (10th - 25:02) also earned a top-10 finish as he placed 10th in a time of 25:02. Providence received strong performances from three freshmen who all scored for the Friars. Freshmen Patrick Moulton of Pelham, N.H. (12th - 25:07), Dylan Wykes of Kingston, Ontario (13th - 25:13) and Patrick Guidera of Clonmel, Ireland (16th - 25:23) rounded out the scoring for the Friars. In addition to Thorpe, Galvin, Moulton and Wykes all earned All-BIG EAST honors.

On the women's side, PC scored 73 points to finish third behind Boston College (53 points) and Georgetown (36 points). Senior Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.) was the Friars' top female runner, placing sixth in a time of 20:41. She was followed by junior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland), who placed ninth (20:58). Shearman and McGettigan each were named All-BIG EAST. Senior Kathryn Casserly of Galway, Ireland (17th - 21:16), freshman Deidre Byrne of Avoca, Ireland (19th - 21:27), and junior Emer O'Shea of Limerick, Ireland (22nd - 21:36) also scored for Providence.
