BOSTON, Mass. -- The Providence College men's indoor track team competed at the IC4A Championship, while the women's squad competed at the ECAC Championship on March 6-7 in Boston, Mass.

The Providence men (26 points), who placed 11th out of 52 teams, were led by graduate student Adam Sutton (Preston, England) who won the 5,000 meters in a personal best time of 13:56.83. Sutton also qualified for the NCAA Championship, which will take place on March 12-13 in Fayetteville, Ark. Junior Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) also was strong in the 5,000 meters as finished 11th in a time of 14:44.98.

The Providence distance medley relay team also was victorious. The quartet of junior Liam Reale (Hospital Ireland), sophomores Dan Robb (Newton, Mass.), Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand) and Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) ran a time of 9:45.57 to capture the race on Sunday, March 7. In the qualifying heats of the distance medley relay on Saturday, March 6, Fagan, Jones, Reale and junior Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) ran a time of 9:40.80, setting a new Providence College record. The quartet of David Healey, Jason Martin, Andy Keith and Mark Carroll ran a time of 9:40.81 at the 1994 BIG EAST Championship. In the mile run, freshman Darren Brown (Spring, Texas) placed third in a time of 4:12.52.
 

 

The women's team (13 points) finished 20th out of 44 teams at the ECAC's. Junior Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland) led the way for the Friars with a second-place finish in the 800 meters in a time of 2:09.31. In the 1,000 meters, sophomore Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) placed fourth in a time of 2:50.70.

In the 3,000 meters, senior Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) finished 11th in a time of 9:42.96, while junior Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) took 19th-place in a time of 10:04.26. Sophomore Jane Nalder (Wellington, New Zealand) finished ninth in the mile in a time of 5:03.10.

The Friars will complete the indoor track season on March 12-13 at the NCAA Championship in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
