Mary Cullen And Martin Fagan Each Earn Most Outstanding Performer Honors On Final Day of BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship
Feb. 19, 2006 AKRON, OHIO - The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams competed in the final day of the 2006 BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track Championship at the Athletic Field House in Akron, Ohio on Sunday, February 19, 2006. Senior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) and senior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) each earned Most Outstanding Performer honors at the BIG EAST Championship. On day one of the championship, Cullen and Fagan each claimed the BIG EAST title in the 5,000 meters. This afternoon, Cullen and Fagan each claimed their second BIG EAST Indoor title of the weekend with victories in the 3,000 meters. Cullen won the women's 3,000 meters in a time of 9:06.26. It marked an automatic qualifying time for the NCAA Championship in the event and also marked a facility record. The previous facility record was set by Brandi Schoeppner (Akron) in a time of 9:46.11. Fagan's 3,000 meter time of 8:14.16 in the men's event qualified him for the IC4A Championship and also set a facility record. The previous facility record was set by James Sjostrom (UNA) in a time of 8:20.85. Also claiming a BIG EAST Indoor title for the Providence men's track team was sophomore Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) in the mile. Smith's mile time of 4:03.47 is a provisional NCAA qualifying time and also set a facility record. The previous facility record in the mile was set by Gareth Price (run-insight.com) in a time of 4:06.40. The Providence men's track team finished ninth at the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship in the team standings (12 teams). The Providence women finished 11th of 16 institutions in the team standings.
In other men's highlights, senior Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand) finished fifth in the 1,000 meters (2:27.25) and qualified for IC4As. Senior Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ontario) finished 11th in the 3,000 meters (8:28.65). Providence finished seventh in the 4x800 meter relay in a time of 7:43.84 and qualified for the IC4A Championships. The relay team was comprised of Jones, sophomore Mike Blanchard, Smith and freshman Nick Berluti. In other women's highlights for Providence, junior Meghan Owen (Danielson, Conn.) finished fourth in the mile and qualified for the ECAC Championships in a time of 4:50.52. Sophomore Mary Nelle Trefz (Iowa City, Iowa) placed 12th in the 3,000 meters and qualified for ECACs in a time of 9:58.94. Senior Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) finished 19th in the 3,000 meters (10:13.53) and sophomore Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario) placed 23rd (10:20.76). Providence's 4x800 meter relay team of senior Roisin Quinn, graduate student Aine Hoban, freshman Katie DiCamillo and sophomore Catherine Breaux finished 10th (9:18.76) and qualified for ECACs.
