Piscataway, N.J. - In its first match of the spring season, the Providence College tennis team was defeated by Rutgers, 7-0, on Sunday, February 5. With the loss, the Friars fall to 2-2 on the year.

In doubles action, Providence's No. 1 duo, junior Jennifer Daigle (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and senior Sara Bitetti (Norwood, Mass.) was defeated by Alina Balasa and Dana Gordon, 1-8. At No. 2, juniors Andrea Lee (Cumberland, R.I.) and Kerry Schulz (Fairfield, Conn.) fell to Ketevan Shmakova and Katrina Elder-Bush, 2-8. Freshmen Ashley Rissolo (Southport, Conn.) and Meghan Gilroy (Fairfiend, Conn.) rounded out the doubles competition with a 3-8 loss to Lauren Edelschein and Anela Dujsic.

Rutgers swept the singles play, with Daigle being defeated at No. 1 (1-6, 3-6), Bitetti at No. 2 (2-6, 2-6), Lee at No. 3 (0-6, 1-6), Rissolo at No. 4 (2-6, 2-6), Gilroy at No. 5 (0-6, 1-6) and sophomore Kate Lyons (Barrington, R.I.) at No. 6 (1-6, 1-6).

The Friars (2-2) return to action Friday, February 10, when they travel to Albany for a 4:00 p.m. match.
