PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team (33-16) pounded out 26 hits and defeated Brown (12-18-1), 12-6 and 5-3, in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 28 at Brown.

The Friars had 18 hits in the first game, including six in the third inning as they cruised to a 12-6 triumph. Already leading, 2-0, going into the third inning, the Friars scored five runs to take a 7-0 lead. However, the Bears bounced back with four runs in the bottom half of the third inning to cut the lead to 7-4. The Friars added another run in the fourth inning on an RBI triple by sophomore Rachel Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to make the score, 8-4.

The Friars scored two more runs in the fifth inning, but Brown came right back with two runs of its own to make the score, 10-4. Providence capped off the scoring in the seventh inning as freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) hit a two-run double. Pittman, who finished with two hits and three RBI, was one of eight Friars to have two hits or more. Sophomore Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif.) batted 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs to lead the team.

On the mound, senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) pitched four innings and struckout seven batters to improve to 16-8. Sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) allowed one run on one hit and struckout two batters in three innings of action.

In the second game, the Friars battled back from a 3-0 deficit to earn a 5-3 win. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Amy Baxter and Uchenna Omakaro each drove in one run. Brown added another run in the fourth inning to go ahead 3-0. However, the Friars scored four runs in the fifth inning to take the lead for good. Sophomore Elena Romero's double to left center drove in Garvin as PC led, 4-3. In the sixth inning, the Friars added an insurance run when sophomore Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Rachel Bartholomew.

Freshman Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) started the game for the Friars and pitched three-plus innings allowing three runs on seven hits. Surosky came in relief and pitched two-plus scoreless innings.

The Friars will play at Seton Hall in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 30.
