Game One Box Score |  Game Two Box Score

STORRS, Conn. - The Providence College softball team was defeated at Connecticut, 2-0 and 1-0, in a BIG EAST Conference doubleheader on Friday, April 22. Providence fell to 30-15 overall and 4-8 in the BIG EAST, while UConn improved to 16-24 overall and 6-10 in the league.

The Friars dropped a 2-0 decision in the first game. UConn's Stephanie DiBiase provided the offense with a two-run home run in the second inning to lead the Huskies to the win. On the mound, UConn's Jessica Gurney earned her fifth shutout of the season and captured her 10th win as she scattered three hits over seven innings and struck out three batters. PC senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) also pitched a strong game, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out four batters in six innings of action.

The second game featured another pitchers' duel between PC sophomore Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) and UConn's Gurney. Surosky held the Huskies scoreless for seven innings, but UConn scored the winning run in the eighth inning when Jessica Quan hit a double down the leftfield line to score Mandy Schettini, who had singled. Surosky pitched seven plus innings, allowed just one run on four hits and struckout three batters. Gurney, who also earned the shutout win in game one, allowed four hits in eight innings of action to lead the Huskies to the sweep.

The Friars will return to action on Tuesday, April 26 as they will battle BIG EAST foe Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The first game of the twin bill is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
