GEORGETOWN, Del. - The Providence College softball team defeated Delaware State, 9-5, and Delaware, 2-0, in the first day of the Bash At The Beach Tournament in Georgetown, Del. With the two wins, the Friars improved to 12-4.

Senior Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) led the Friars in the second game victory over Delaware as she pitched her fifth complete game of the season and allowed just one hit. At the plate, the Friars scored the only two runs of the game in the third inning as sophomore Shannon Garvin (Fresno, Calif) and Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas) each crossed the plate.

The first game featured more offense as the Friars belted out 13 hits en route to a 9-5 win over Delaware State. Eight of those hits came in the fifth inning as the Friars scored six runs to erase a 2-1 deficit. Senior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) hit a two-run home run, while freshman Sam Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) capped off the fifth inning with an RBI single as the Friars led, 7-2. Providence added two more runs in the sixth inning to secure the win

On the mound, freshman Tanza Lewis (Trabuco Canyon, Calif) pitched a complete game and allowed five runs on eight hits and struck out seven batters as she improved to 4-1.

Providence will resume action at the Bash At The Beach Tournament on Saturday, March 19. Providence will play Albany and Maryland Baltimore County.
