Women's Soccer Earns 0-0 Draw With No. 13 Villanova
Oct. 1, 2006
Philadelphia, Pa. -- Junior Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) made eight saves and posted her fifth shutout of the season as the Providence College women's soccer team (3-3-5, 0-3-2 BIG EAST) earned a 0-0 double overtime tie with No. 13 Villanova (11-0-2, 3-0-2 BIG EAST) on Sunday afternoon at the West Campus Soccer Complex. It was the first time this season that the Wildcats have been shutout. Both teams had chances to end the game in the two extra periods but the draw seemed inevitable after a Wildcat goal with 1:35 left in the second overtime was negated by an offside call. The Wildcats outshot the Friars 22-11 for the game, but held just an 8-6 edge in shots on goal. Villanova took four shots in the overtime periods, while PC generated three. Elfers registered three of her eight saves in overtime to preserve the game for the Friars. Villanova goalkeeper Jillian Loyden made six saves to tie a career-high with her eighth shutout of the season. The Friars had a series of offensive chances early in the second half after a foul was called on the Wildcats in the attacking third. A free kick by Providence deflected off a wall of Villanova defenders and generated consecutive corner kicks on the right side. The second corner was intercepted by Loyden, however, and the Wildcats cleared the possession. Villanova outshot the Friars 7-4 in a scoreless first half and went into the intermission without a goal for just the fourth time this season. Elfers had three saves in the opening period. The Friars will continue BIG EAST play next weekend when they host Syracuse on Friday, October 6, at 3:00 p.m.
