Box Score

The Providence College women's ice hockey team defeated Boston College, 5-2, on Sunday, February 22 at Kelley Rink in Chestnut Hill, Mass. to complete their weekend series with the Eagles.

The Friars got on the board early as junior Ashley Payton (Chesterfield, Mo.) rifled the puck top-shelf after receiving a cross-ice feed from fellow junior Danielle Bourgette (Anaheim, Calif.) just 38 seconds into the game. Providence struck again at the 10:15 mark as senior Meredith Roth (Dubuque, Iowa) passed the puck to senior Darlene Stephenson (Virden, Manitoba) down low in the corner. Stephenson then skated toward the net, drawing the defense to her before finding junior Rush Zimmerman (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) parked on the edge of the crease. Zimmerman redirected the pass through the five-hole of Lisa Davis to put the Friars up, 2-0.

Roth scored the game-winning goal at 10:01 of the second period as she fired a laser from the point that beat Davis high stick-side. Sophomore Karen Thatcher (Douglas, Mass.) and junior Hilary Greaves (Cranston, R.I.) were credited with assists on the play. Boston College scored twice to get with in one goal of the Friars before senior Kelli Halcisak (Grosse Ile, Mich.) scored with 23 seconds remaining in the second.

Halcisak scored her second goal of the game just 19 seconds into the third period to put the final touches on the game as she ripped a shot from the top of the face-off circle. Providence outshot Boston College, 44-15. Junior Amy Thomas (Austin, Texas) made 13 saves for the Friars as they improved to 15-11-2 overall on the season and 10-3-1 in HOCKEY EAST, while Davis made 39 saves for the Eagles as they fell to 5-17-3 overall and 0-13-1 in HOCKEY EAST.

Providence College returns to action on February 28 and 29 as they play a home-and-home series against the HOCKEY EAST leading New Hampshire Wildcats.
