Field Hockey Drops Second-Straight Game

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Providence College field hockey team fell to Villanova, 4-2, in BIG EAST action on Sunday, October 7. The defeat was the second straight for the Friars who fall to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in the BIG EAST. Providence got on the board first as senior Maggie Hoffmann (Southbury, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season at the 23:29 mark of the first half. The goal was assisted by junior Courtney Dow (Hampstead, N.H.). Villanova rallied to tie the game, 1-1, on a goal from Christina Lugones with 17:23 left in the first half off an assist from Brooke Bergmann. Junior Jennifer Chin (Norwood, Mass.) propelled the Friars to a 2-1 lead by scoring her fourth goal of the season with 15:12 remaining in the half. The Wildcats countered to tie the score again, 2-2, before the halftime break on a goal from Stephanie Mayhart. The goal was assisted by Krissy Malchitsky with 8:07 on the clock. In the second half, the Friars were held scoreless as the Wildcats connected on two goals to secure the win. Malchitsky registered a goal on a penalty corner with 19:15 remaining in the game to put Villanova ahead, 3-2. The Wildcats scored their fourth and final goal with 16:26 remaining in the game on an unassisted goal from Leah Lisausky. Providence goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) made a career-high 10 saves in the loss. Meghan Helwig took in six saves for the Wildcats. Villanova out-shot Providence, 17-10, and held the advantage on penalty corners, 10-8. Providence will travel to the University of Massachusetts on Wednesday, October 10. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
