Field Hockey Earns 2-1 Win Over Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated the University of Rhode Island, 2-1, on Wednesday, September 4, in Kingston, R.I. The Friars took an early, 1-0, lead as senior sweeper Kara Lukens (Pennsburg, Pa.) connected on her first goal of the season with 19:20 remaining in the first half. Lukens' goal came off of a penalty corner, and was assisted by senior midfielder Courtney Dow (Hampstead, N.H.). Providence held the 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Rams tied the game at the 18:22 mark of the second half on an unassisted goal from Kelly Johnson. The Friars scored what proved to be the game-winning goal with 11:42 remaining in the game. Sophomore Amy Phillips (Worcester, Mass.) connected on her first goal of the season after senior Jennifer Chin (Norwood, Mass.) beat Ram's goaltender, Danielle Dagoia, one-on-one. Providence goalkeeper Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) registered six saves to earn the win. Dagoia also finished with six saves for URI. In upcoming field hockey action, Providence (2-1) will travel to Fairfield University on Saturday, September 7 in Fairfield, Conn. The game is scheduled for noon. On Sunday, September 8, the Friars will remain in Fairfield, Conn. to take on Sacred Heart University at 1:00 p.m.
