Men's And Women's Indoor Track Teams Open 2001-02 Season
Dec. 3, 2001 BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams competed at the Boston University Open, on Saturday, December 1, in Boston, Massachusetts. On the men's side, freshman Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) finished first in the mile run, and qualified for the IC4A and BIG EAST Championships, with a time of 4:11.7. Freshman Mike Myers (Voorhees, N.J.) finished ninth (4:29.2), freshman Ben Pollock (Westford, Mass.) finished 13th (4:33.8), and senior Tim Morris (Walpole, Mass.) finished 21st, with a time of 4:39.5. Junior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.) qualified for the BIG EAST Championship, in the 3,000-meter run, with a first-place finish, in a time of 8:30.1. Freshmen Patrick Guidera of Clonmel, Ireland (3rd - 8:39.4) and Patrick Moulton of Pelham, N.H. (5th - 8:41.8) also finished in the top 10 in the 3,000-meter run. Freshman Mike St. Thomas (Cumberland, R.I.) finished 12th (9:14.8), and junior Jonathan Earle (Oakton, Va.) finished 18th (9:55.6). In the men's 800-meter run, sophomore Brian Colleran (Stamford, Conn.) led all Friars with a eighth-place finish (2:01.1). Junior Dave Wickman (Jefferson, Mass.) finished ninth (2:01.2), and senior Mark Ryan (Lowell, Mass.) rounded out the top-10 finishers with a 10th-place finish (2:01.3). Freshman Tom Anderson of Manchester, N.H. finished 20th (2:09.2), and freshman Mike Whooley (San Burno, Calif.) placed 21st (2:11.0). On the women's side, freshmen Roisin Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) and Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland), along with senior Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) all qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and BIG EAST Championships, in their respective events. In the second even of the day, Quinn finished first in the 500-meter run, with a time of 1:16.1. She was the only Providence College athlete to compete in the 500. Byrne took first place in the 1,000-meter run, in a time of 2:45.6. Senior Kate Gall (Cumberland, Md.) finished fifth (3:04.3), senior Carolyn Turco (Danvers, Mass.) finished 10th (3:16.1), and Juliette Paul finished 16th (3:23.1). Casserly qualified for the ECAC's and BIG EAST in the mile, with a first-place finish (4:55.5). Freshman Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) finished third (5:02.7) and qualified for the BIG EAST Championships. Senior Jessica Romaniuk (Suffern, N.Y.) placed ninth (5:38.7), and sophomore Carol Geddes (Seekonk, Mass.) finished 11th (5:44.5) to round out the field. In the 3,000-meter run, sophomore Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) earned a second-place finish (10:13.9), and sophomore Emily Tallen (Kingston, Ontario) finished third (10:18.4). Three Friar women also placed in the field events at the BU Open. Freshman Emma Foster (Schuylerville, N.Y.) earned sixth in the shot put, with a throw of 33'-5.75" (10.20m). In the high jump, freshman Erin Pierce (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tied teammate, junior Kristina Sawicki (Orange, Conn.) for seventh, with a jump of 4'-9.75" (1.47m).
