Men's And Women's Indoor Track Competes At Terrier Classic

BOSTON, Mass. - The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams competed at the Terrier Classic, hosted by Boston University at the Track and Tennis Center in Boston, Mass. The men competed on Friday, January 27, while the women's team competed on Saturday, January 28. On the men's side, four Friar runners qualified for the BIG EAST and IC4A Indoor Track Championships in their respective events. Sophomore Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) won the mile in a time of 3:39.33. It marked the first sub-four-minute mile in his collegiate career at PC. It also set a new facility record at the Track and Tennis Center in Boston, Mass. The previous record was set by Alan Webb (Nike) in a time of 3:59.80. Smith's performance also qualified him for the BIG EAST and IC4A Championships. In the 1,000 meters, senior Richard Jones (Wellington, New Zealand) finished fourth (2:23.77) and qualified for the BIG EAST nad IC4A Championships. Two Friar runners qualified for BIG EAST and IC4A's in the 5,000 meters. Senior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) placed fourth in the event with a time of 14:01.15. Senior Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ontario) completed the race in 11th place in a time of 14:22.92. Smith and Fagan ran NCAA Qualifying Times in their respective events. On the women's side, eight Friar runners qualified for the BIG EAST Conference Indoor Track Championship in their respective events. Six of those athletes also qualified for the ECAC Indoor Track Championship. In the 5,000 meters, senior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) earned a first-place finish with a time of 15:39.43. Her time is the fastest in the country by a collegiate athlete this season. Graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England) finished fifth (16:41.68), while sophomore Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario) and senior Ashley Jensen (Lincoln, R.I.) finished 18th (17:17.71) and 23rd (17:27.29), respectively. Cullen, Hoban, Childs and Jensen each qualified for BIG EAST's and ECAC's in the event. Junior Meghan Owen (Danielson, Conn.) won the mile in a time of 4:44.51. Sophomore Mary Nelle Trefz (Iowa City, Iowa) finished 13th in the mile in a time of 5:02.14. Both athletes qualified for the BIG EAST Indoor Track Championship. Owen's time also was good enough to qualify her for ECAC's. In the 3,000 meters, freshman Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) qualified for the BIG EAST and the ECAC Indoor Track Championships with a 14th-place finish in a time of 9:42.35. Senior Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) also qualified for the BIG EAST Championship in the event with a 29th-place finish in a time of 10:11.67. Cullen and Owen each ran NCAA Qualifying Times in their respective events.
