Box Score

The Providence College men's soccer team defeated West Virginia University, 1-0, on Saturday, October 12 in Providence, R.I.

The Friars, who last beat the Mountaineers in 2000, got on the board early in the 6th minute when freshman midfielder Eoin Lynch (Yarmouth, Maine) scored off a long pass up the middle from fellow freshman midfielder Anthony Petrarca (Johnston, R.I.). Lynch settled the ball and then fired a shot in to the top right corner of the net. It was Lynch's team leading fifth goal of the year. As the conditions deteriorated in the second half on a rain soaked field neither team generated many scoring chances the rest of the game.

Providence outshot West Virginia, 11-5 and carried the play for most of the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Jeff Newman (Northboro, Mass.) was not tested often but made two key saves to earn his third shutout of the season.

With the win Providence extended their home winning streak to two and improved to 4-8-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the BIG EAST while the Mountaineers fell to 3-8-1 overall and 0-5-1 in the BIG EAST on the season. Providence's next match is on Tuesday, October 15 at 12:00 p.m. at Brown University.
