Men's Lacrosse Opens MAAC Schedule With An 8-3 Win Over Wagner

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team opened the 2002 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule with an, 8-3, victory over Wagner College, Wednesday afternoon in Piscataway, New Jersey. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Staten Island, New York at Wagner, but poor field conditions pushed the game to nearby Rutgers University. Freshman Dan Giuntini (Flora Park, N.Y.) scored a game-high two goals for the Friars, while senior Kyle Ojakian (Cheshire, Conn.) contributed one goal and two assists to lead Providence. Sophomore defender Ben Brown (Ranch Santa Fe, Calif.) scored his first collegiate goal to start the Friar scoring, with 11:16 remaining in the first quarter of the game, to take a 1-0 lead. Wagner answered with a goal at the 5:27 mark of the first quarter to tie the game, 1-1, but Giuntini put PC up 2-1 at the two-minute mark. In the second quarter, the Friars jumped ahead to a 6-2 lead on goals from freshman David Krasnica (Mendham, N.J.), sophomore Ryan Russell (Montvale, N.J.), junior Skip Dunphy (Manhasset, N.Y.) and Giuntini. PC never looked back, scoring one goal each in the third and fourth quarters to close out the game, 8-3. Ojakian netted his third goal of the season off an assist from senior Chris Houston (Garden City, N.Y.) with 13:44 remaining in the third quarter. Sophomore Kevin Kornobis (Merrick, N.Y.) added the Friars' final goal in the fourth quarter at the 10:44 mark. Senior goaltender John Farley (West Simsbury, Conn.) registered eight saves for PC in the victory, and improves to 3-2 overall. Providence (3-2, 1-0 MAAC) will host Butler in non-conference action on Friday, March 22. The game is currently scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Glay Field.
