Men's Lacrosse Falls To Fairfield In Season Opener, 6-5

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's lacrosse team opened the 2007 season with a 6-5 loss to Fairfield on Saturday, February 24 in Fairfield, Conn. Fairfield scored four unanswered goals in the first quarter of play and led 5-1 at halftime. Providence answered in the second half by outscoring the Stags, 4-1, but the rally fell short. Junior Devin McBride (Marblehead, Mass.) scored a team-high three goals to lead Providence, including two man-up goals. Senior Brendan Ryan (Chatham, N.J.) contributed two assists and one goal on the day. Sophomore Bobby Labadini (Westford, Mass.) rounded out the goal scorers for PC. Dan Boudreau led the way for Fairfield with three goals, including what proved to be the game-winner with 12:17 reamining in the game. It marked the Stag's only goal of the half. Greg Downing, Travis Nelson and Brian Stanton each netted one goal. Mike Bocklet, Chris Campbell and Chris Manley each were credited with two assists. Senior goaltender Peter Littell (Upper Montclair, N.J.) played the first 19:22 of the game for PC between the pipes. He allowed five goals and made one save. He was relieved by sophomore Robert Bryan (Apex, N.C.) who played 40:38 minutes, allowed one goal and made four saves. Michael Kruger earned the victory in goal for Fairfield. He recorded 10 saves and allowed five goals.
Providence (0-1) returns to action on Friday, March 2 against non-conference foe Quinnipiac at the Friar Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The opening face-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
