Nolan Schaefer Named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month
March 3, 2003 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on Monday, March 3 that Providence College men's hockey senior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) was named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for February. It marked the second time in his career that Schaefer has been named Hockey East Goaltender of the Month. Schaefer, a 2001 Second Team All-American, led the Friars to a 6-0-2 record in February. He started all eight games and posted a 2.06 goals against average and a .936 save percentage. He made a career-high 46 saves as the Friars defeated fourth-ranked New Hampshire, 5-2, on February 9 and stopped 33 shots in the Friars' 5-1 victory at No. 2 Maine on February 14. Most recently, Schaefer stopped 30 of 31 shots as the Friars defeated UMass Lowell, 3-1, in the final regular season game on February 28. During the month of February, Schaefer was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week twice and earned Player of the Week honors once as he led the Friars to an undefeated mark in February for the first time since the 1988-89 season. For the season, Schaefer has a 13-6-2 record, a 2.70 goals against average and a .916 save percentage. The Friars begin their best-of-three Hockey East Quarterfinal series versus Boston University on Thursday, March 6 at Schneider Arena. The second game is Friday, March 7 at 7:00 p.m. and if a third game is necessary it will be on Saturday, March 8 at 7:00 p.m. All games will be played at Schneider Arena.
