No. 13 Men's Hockey Defeated by No. 10 Boston University, 5-4 in Overtime.
March 7, 2003 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 5-4, in overtime, by No. 10 Boston University on Friday, March 7 in game one of a best-of-three Hockey East quarterfinal series at Schneider Arena. It was BU's first victory against the Friars this season in four meetings, all of which were decided in overtime. The Terriers' (22-12-3) Bryan Miller scored the game-winning goal, beating Providence senior goaltender Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) 8:03 into the overtime period after both teams had missed on quality scoring opportunities. The Friars' (19-13-3) senior co-captain Jon DiSalvatore (South Windsor, Conn.) scored the second of his two goals just 48 seconds into the third period to give Providence a 4-3 lead. DiSalvatore collected a loose puck in the BU defensive zone, fired a shot on the Terriers' Sean Fields and slammed home the rebound for his 19th goal of the season. The Terriers forced overtime just under four minutes later when junior Kenny Magowan completed his hat trick with his third goal, an unassisted tally, with 14:25 remaining in regulation. Boston University struck first in the contest, the third consecutive year that the two teams have met in the HOCKEY EAST quarterfinals, when Magowan scored the first of his three goals at 2:56 of the first period. DiSalvatore answered for the Friars, converting a feed from junior defenseman Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) at 4:03 on the Providence power play. Magowan put BU back in front, 2-1, when he tallied at 12:35 from freshman Brad Zancanaro. PC graduate student Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) roofed a shot past Fields to even the score at 2-2 on the power play with 6:01 remaining in the period. The second period saw the Friars take a 3-2 lead when sophomore Chris Chaput (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored Providence's third power-play goal at 7:30. The Terriers evened the score at 3-3 when junior Frantisek Skladany beat the Friars' Schaefer, converting on feeds from Freddy Meyer and Brian McConnell. The Terriers outshot the Friars in the contest, 46-30, as Schaefer made 41 saves for Providence and Fields recorded 26 stops for Boston University. The Friars' special teams played well, scoring on three-of-four power-play opportunities and killing off all three BU man-advantages. The two teams will return to the ice on Saturday, March 8 in the second game at Schenider Arena. Face off is at 7:00 p.m.
