Men's Hockey Skates To 3-3 Overtime Tie At UMass
Feb. 10, 2007 AMHERST, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team skated to a 3-3 overtime tie versus the University of Massachusetts Saturday night at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. UMass' Mark Matheson scored with 40 seconds left in the third period to force overtime. For the second straight night the Friars opened the scoring. Sophomore Kyle Laughlin (Gambrills, Md.) played the puck ahead to senior Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) who skated into the bottom of the left faceoff circle before snapping a high wrist shot past the glove side of UMass goalie Jon Quick at 13:22. It marked McDonald's team leading 11th goal of the season and it also tied a career high. However, the Minutemen used the power play to even the score at 17:47 when Matt Jarman played the puck right in front to Matt Anderson, who recorded his fifth goal of the season. Both teams traded goals in the second period. The Minutemen took their first lead of the night at 5:57 when Will Ortiz's shot from the top of the right face off circle deflected off the skate of a PC defenseman and into the net. The Friars responded at 7:59 when sophomore Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) slid a cross ice to freshman Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) who fired a wrist shot into the open net. The goal, which was also assisted by sophomore John Mori (Westport, Conn.), marked Fayne's fourth tally this season.
The Friars regained the lead at 11:46 of the third period when sophomore Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) ripped a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that eluded Quick. It marked Taormina's third goal this season. The Minutemen scored with 40 seconds remaining when Matheson connected on his 12th goal of the season. Matheson took a slap shot from the blue line that eluded PC goalie Tyler Sims (Grand Blanc, Mich.), who was screened in front.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, February 16 with a road game versus Northeastern at Matthews Arena.
