Men's Basketball Signs A Highly Recruited Two-Sport Athlete
April 13, 2005 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College men's basketball coach Tim Welsh announced on Wednesday, April 13 that student-athlete Geoff McDermott (New Rochelle, N.Y.) signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2005. McDermott, a 6-foot-6-inch, 220-pound forward was a heavily recruited two-sport standout at New Rochelle High School. In addition to starring on the basketball court, he also served as the quarterback for the football team, leading New Rochelle to two consecutive Class AA state football title games and earning All-State accolades as a senior. In 2005, McDermott paced New Rochelle's basketball team to a 26-2 mark. He helped the team reach the Class AA state finals where New Rochelle was defeated by nationally ranked Niagara Falls. In four state tournament games this season, McDermott averaged 20.0 points and 15.2 rebounds. For the entire season he averaged 19.8 points, 11.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists. For his efforts, McDermott was named Westchester's Mr. Basketball. He also earned MVP honors for the Section 1, Iona Prep and Rim Rocker tournaments. McDermott played AAU basketball for the New York Gauchos. "We are excited to have Geoff McDermott joining our program next season," Welsh said. "He is a very talented athlete who has proven he can compete and lead against some of the top high school talent in the country. Geoff is the type of player who makes everyone around him better."
