QUEENS, N.Y.-- The Pitt women's soccer was defeated by Big East foe St. John's 1-0 Friday night at Belson Stadium. The loss moves the Panthers to 2-5-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big East. St. John's improves to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big East.

Brittany Cavarra scored the lone goal for St. John's with less than three minutes remaining in the first half and the Red Storm held on to defeat the Panthers. The goal came just after the rain subsided when Cavarra took control of the ball outside of the box and chipped a shot over Pitt goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi.

Pitt outshot St. John's 17-8 but none of those shots found their way into the back of the net. The Panthers threatened to tie the game in the 66th minute with a direct kick outside of the box that was taken by Meta Haley. Haley's shot hit the Red Storm's defensive wall. Sara Gutting gathered the rebounded ball and fired a shot on goal. Rebecca Capinera made the diving save for the Red Storm.

"We made a mistake and they were able to capitalize," head coach Sue-Moy Chin said. "We had a couple of good sequences where we threatened but we just weren't able to score. We just couldn't finish. Sara Gutting played well, so did Meta Haley. We dominated the play in the second half but came up short."

With less than five minutes left in the game Pitt was awarded another direct kick. The ball was knocked around inside the box until Corina Sebesta stepped in aggressively and took a shot on goal that was blocked by a St. John's defender. The Panthers had some good chances but could not finish any shots.

Pitt continues Big East competition on Sunday, September 25th when it hosts Syracuse at Founders Field.
