Oct. 28, 2001
PITTSBURGH-Two second-half goals gave the Panthers' men's soccer team a lead over Virginia Tech before the Hokies game back to tie it at 2-2 in Blacksburg, Va. on Sunday afternoon. After a scoreless first half of play, the Hokies got on the board at the 56:27 mark on a goal by Ty Enmark, brother of Panther women's soccer freshman Kendall Enmark (Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II). Enmark headed in a pass from Eric Prigot past Panther goalkeeper Justin Gaul (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./William Tennent). Just over a minute later, Pittsburgh tied the game at 1-1 on a header from the post area by senior Chris Churchill (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley). It was Churchill's fifth goal of the year and Miles Dowiak (Houston, Texas/Mayde Creek) assisted on the goal for his first point of the season. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead at the 61:04 mark when freshman Marco Carrizales (Missouri City, Texas/Alfonso Crutch Charter School) was able to deflect the ball off a Hokie defender and past goalkeeper Colin Kibler. With just 11:20 remaining in the game, Enmark registered his second goal of the game when his shot deflected off Gaul and into the net. The teams played two overtimes, but neither came up with the winning goal. For the game, Pittsburgh outshot Virginia Tech, 16-12, after having just one shot in the first half of play. Mark Sikora (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) led the Panthers with five shots and Carrizales had three.
In the Panthers' first seven games, their record was 1-6, but have turned things around to go 3-1-3 in their past seven. Pittsburgh's final three games will be at Founders Field in Indianola, Pa., starting with Wed., Oct. 31 against Bucknell at 7 p.m.
