Pittsburgh Downs Rutgers, 86-85 in OT

1/17/1998

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Isaac Hawkins' basket with 13 seconds to play in overtime helped Pittsburgh squeak to an 86-85 win over Rutgers in a Big East conference game Saturday night.

Hawkins' basket was a put-back off Vonteego Cummings' missed driving layup with Pitt down 85-84.

Rutgers (7-8, 1-6) called time out and then went down court, where Earl Johnson and Sam Sanders both missed shots with under five seconds to go.

Cummings had sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer with eight seconds to go in regulation.

With 35 seconds to play, Rutgers appeared to have its first road conference win in sight.

Ricardo Greer hit two straight baskets, one off a steal on an inbounds pass, to pull Pitt (7-5, 2-3) within one, 70-69, with 17 seconds to go.

Two free throws by Johnson put Rutgers up 72-69, but Cummings took the inbounds pass, dribbled down court, and pulled up to send the game into overtime.
