Pittsburgh Cross Country Teams Compete at the Big East Championships

The men's teams placed eighth, while the women's team finished ninth.

PITTSBURGH—The Pittsburgh cross country teams competed Friday at the Big East Championships in Van Cortland Park, N.Y. The men’s squad placed eighth, while the women’s team placed ninth.

            Freshman Eric Fleming (West Chester, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) was the first Panther for the men to cross the finish line, placing 31st in a time of 26:09. Also placing in the top 50 was freshman Andy Tomaswick (Natrona Heights, Pa./Highland), who finished 48th in 26:56.

            Leading the way for the women’s squad was Junior Maureen McCandless (Bensalem, Pa./Nazareth Academy), who placed 22nd in a time of 21:56. Junior Lauren Shaffer (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) ran 22:34 and placed 38th.
