Men Swimming and Diving In Third After Day One

LONG ISLAND, N.Y.- With one day of competition in the Big East Championships behind them, the University of Pittsburgh men's swimming and diving team is tied for third in a tight race with 31 points. The Panthers finished third in their first event and fourth in the second race, tonight.  

The evening's events opened with the 800 free relay, where senior Jason Miller (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Vallley), junior Nathan McCutcheon (Apollo, Pa./The Kiski School), freshman Patrick Mansfield (Dayton, OH/Chaminade-Julienne) and senior Darryl Washington (Aldan, Pa./Penn Wood) combined to turn in a 6:38.92 performance. This is two spots higher than its 2005 finish and nearly eight second faster.

Later, in the 200 medley relay, it was senior Tommy Bird (Charleton, W.Va./Capitol), sophomore Warren Barnes (Pickering, Ont./Dunbarton), senior Michael Bernardi (Middlesex, N.J./Middlesex) and Washington finishing fourth with a time of 1:30.09, and outlasted by Cincinnati's time of 1:30.04.

Competition will continue until Saturday February 18th at the Nassau County Aquatic Center, in Long Island, NY.  The events for tomorrow, Feb. 16th include the 500 free, 200 IM, Men's IM diving, 50 free and the 200 free relay.
