WEST POINT, N.Y. - Senior Ryan Hazelton capped his final season on the Army golf team with a selection to the 2001-02 All-New England First Team.
Hazelton, a four-time letterwinner at Army, led the black Knights with a 73.6 stroke average in the fall and finished the spring third with a 77.0 average. The team captain won the West Point/Habecker Invitational Sept. 23 with a two-round 140. Hazelton led the Black Knights in four out of 13 tournaments this season.
After taking seventh place at the Patriot League Championship this spring, Hazelton was selected to the all-league team for the third consecutive year. He also earned the honor in 2000 and 2001.
Hazelton was also named an All-New England player last season.
Joining Hazelton on the All-New England First Team were Mike Carbone (Rhode Island), Dean Carringan (Hartford), Chris Eckerle (Yale), Adam Fuch (Binghamton), Tom Giles (Rhode Island) Sean Vigue (Connecticut) and Michael Welch (Central Connecticut).
The Black Knights concluded their most successful season in recent years with their first trip the NCAA Regional in seven years. Army finished 26th in the Central Regional at the Pleasant Valley Golf Course in Little Rock, Ark. The Black Knights won the 2002 Patriot League Championship on Apr. 21 by a startling 29 strokes to receive the league's automatic bid to the regional.
The Black Knights won two tournaments and had two individual winners in 2001-02. Hazelton lead the Army to win the West Point/Habecker Invitational and Scott Manley took home the medalist honors at the Patriot League Tournament.
