Bucknell Swimming and Diving Teams Earn Academic Recognition

July 19, 2005

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's swimming and diving teams both ranked among the Division I leaders in team grade-point average in 2005, according to the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America and collegeswimming.com. The Bison women ranked 20th with a 3.34 GPA, while men were 30th at 2.98. Both teams earned all-academic status from the CSCAA.

Under the direction of coach Jerry Foley, both teams backed up outstanding seasons with excellent work in the classroom. Bucknell's women's squad captured its third straight Patriot League title in 2005, while the men's squad finished fourth.

Following the season Bucknell swept the men's and women's Patriot League Scholar-Athlete awards in swimming and diving. Rebecca Scheffter, the PL champion in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle as well as three relays, was the women's Scholar-Athlete, while Adam Freeman captured the men's honor for the second time in his career after winning the silver medal in the 1-meter dive and taking fourth in the 3-meter event.

Bucknell led the conference in Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recipients in the 2004 fall semester, with the winter and spring honorees to be announced later this month. Bucknell has also claimed 110 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 1970, third-most among all Division I institutions.
