ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Navy men's swimming and diving team, winners of the 2004 Patriot League title and represented by five athletes at the recent NCAA Championship, was recognized as an Academic All-American Team by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for its efforts in the classroom.
The CSCAA bestows Academic All-America honors to all programs that as a team attain at least a 2.8 grade-point average during the 2003 fall semester. A total of 53 Division I programs were recognized this year, with Navy's 2.94 average placing the Mids 35th in the country.
"Collegiate swimming requires spending a lot of time in the pool training, which corresponds to not a lot of available spare time," said Navy team captain Marshall Boyd. "Our team is always on a tight schedule. We are very focused on our physical training, but in order to be considered a successful team we must be strong in everything we do. Academics are just as important as pool time and we stress that on our team. To successfully balance swimming and academics is a challenge, but to do so and come out on top in both is a great victory for everyone on the team."
"We are honored to be recognized by the CSCAA as a team that can complete academically," said Navy head swimming coach Bill Roberts.
