Aug. 28, 2004

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The Pacific field hockey team opened its 2004 regular season schedule with a 3-1 non-conference victory over Providence (0-1) on Saturday, Aug. 28, at Maxwell Family Field.

Sophomore Vianney Campos (Chula Vista, Calif.) led the Tigers' offensive charge with a pair of goals in the game, while freshman Melody Demel (Fallbrook, Calif.) notched two assists in her first contest as a Tiger.

Campos was recognized as the NorPac Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman in 2003. Pacific took control of the game in the opening ten minutes as junior

Laura Maurer (Fallbrook, Calif.) took a pass from Demel and redirected into the Providence.

Moments later, Campos connected on her first shot of the season off a pass from Demel to give Pacific a 2-0 lead.

Providence, however, battled back late in the first half as the Friars Kati Lary made it a 2-1 game with under a minute remaining in the first half. Lary's goal was set up by a crossing entry pass from Melissa McGow.

Following halftime the two teams battled back and forth, but it was Campos and Tigers that struck the final blow as the Campos sent an entry pass from senior Lindsey Rovai (San Jose, Calif.) into the Providence net with just under 15 minutes remaining in the half to give Pacific some breathing room.

Pacific is next in action with a non-conference contest against Hofstra on Sunday, Aug. 29, at 3 p.m. at Stanford .
