Pacific drops seventh consecutive game, 11-2 to UC Riverside

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers baseball team dropped its seventh consecutive game, 11-2, to UC Riverside on Friday, May 5.

With the loss, the Tigers fell to 22-20 on the season and 3-10 in the Big West Conference, while UC Riverside moved to 23-18 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

The Highlanders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as leadoff man, Aaron Grant started the game with a triple. Grant scored on a sacrifice fly by the second batter, Brett Bigler.

UC Riverside went on to capitalize on most of their chances as the game wore on, scoring one run in the third, four runs in the fourth and five in the eighth to build an 11-0 lead.

The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the eighth as senior Matt Berezay (Manteca, Calif.) launched his ninth home run of the season over the center field wall. Berezay's home run was a solo shot and his first home run at Klein Family Field.

Pacific added a run in the ninth as sophomore John Joines (Milpitas, Calif.) led off with a single to center. Senior Jake Ross (Friday Harbor, Wash.) followed with a single to right. One out later, freshman Joe Oliveira drove home Joines with a sacrifice fly to left.

Pacific starter, freshman Ty'Relle Harris (Fairfield, Calif.), suffered the loss (4-3) as he allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits in six innings. Harris did record seven strikeouts, a new career-high.

UC Riverside's James Simmons (8-3) picked up the win as he allowed one run on eight hits in 7.2 innings.

The Tigers and Highlanders will continue their three-game series on Saturday, May 6 at 1 p.m. at Klein Family Field.
