Women's Volleyball Embarks on European Trip
June 15, 2006 LOS ANGELES - The UCLA women's volleyball team is set to depart on Saturday, June 17, for a 10-day trip to Slovenia and Italy. The team is scheduled to play five matches on the trip and will have two full days in Rome while also visiting Ravenna, Italy; Milan, Italy; Venice, Italy; Novara, Italy; and Ljubljana, Slovenia. The Bruins open their competitive schedule on Monday, June 19 against the Slovenian National Team in Izola, Slovenia. The team will then depart for Italy, where they will spend the remainder of the trip. Other opponents scheduled for the European tour include Teodora Vavenna, Aystel Novara, the Italian Junior National Team and either Lido di Ostia or AS Fidia Cesano. "We are all very excited about the trip," said senior outside hitter Katie Carter. "We are ready for a new experience and I think this will be a good bonding experience for our team, as well as an opportunity to play together against some good competition. This trip also provides a good opportunity for those of us who want to play professionally in Europe to see what it's like." The UCLA women's volleyball program last took a European trip during the spring of 2001, traveling to and playing in Holland, Belgium and Germany. UCLA, which reached the NCAA Regional Semifinals last season, loses just one starting player from last year's team. The Bruins are scheduled to begin their 2006 season on Saturday, August 26, in Cincinnati. UCLA Women's Volleyball European Tour
