UW's Bob Ernst is Pac-10 Crew Co-Coach of the Year
June 18, 2004 WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Bob Ernst, who guided the Washington men's varsity eight crew to its second straight conference championship and national runner-up finish, received the Pac-10 Coach of the Year award and seven Husky rowers were also honored by the conference, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced. Ernst shared the conference men's coaching award with Oregon State's Kjell Oswld. The Husky men topped the overall team standings at the Pac-10 championships, May 16 in Rancho Cordova, Calif. Washington crews swept conference titles in all three events, the varsity eight, junior varsity eight and varsity four competitions. At the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) national championships in Camden, N.J. on June 5, UW finished second in the varsity eight competition behind only the undefeated Harvard crew. The Huskies' junior varsity and varsity four crews won national championships. This is the 10th Pac-10 coaching honor for Ernst who just completed his 30th year on the rowing staff at Washington, his 16th as head coach of the men's program. Ernst was named the 1987 women's coach of the year by the Pac-10 that recognized his work with the Husky men from 1990-93, 1995-97 and 2003. California's Dave O'Neill was the recipient of the women's Coach of the Year award after leading the Golden Bears to the Pac-10 varsity eight title. The conference also honored several athletes and recognized the newcomer of the year. Husky junior Greg King, the coxswain for the varsity eight crew, received the men's Newcomer of the Year trophy. A native of Meadville, Pa., King attended school at UW last year, but did not participate with the rowing team. California freshman Neela Bushnell was the women's top newcomer.
Four men and three women garnered all-conference accolades for the Huskies who tied Cal with the highest number of honorees. Members of the UW men's varsity eight earning All-Pac-10 acclaim were senior Sam Burns (Seattle, Wash./O'Dea HS), senior Andy Derrick (Cincinnati, Ohio), junior Giuseppe Lanzone (McLean, Va.) and senior Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.).
The trio of Huskies on the all-conference women's team were junior Sanda Hangan (Dorohoi, Romania), senior Mary Reeves (Dayton, Wash.) and senior Yvonneke Stenken (Sacramento, Calif.). Those three rowed UW's varsity eight to a second-place finish at the Pac-10 Championships before winning the petite final at the NCAA Championships.
