PAC-10 LEADS THE WAY WITH 11 NCAA TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--The Pac-10 lived up to its well deserved billing of "Conference of Champions" by capturing 11 NCAA titles during the 2003-04 academic year, more than double any other conference. The Pac-10 total of 11 NCAA titles was followed by the Southeastern Conference, which was runner-up with five NCAA crowns, and the Big Ten, which had four. And it should be noted that the Pac-10 total does not include USC's national championship in football or California's in rugby, as they are not counted as NCAA titles. The 11 titles for the Pac-10 is the most for the Conference since it had 11 in 1997-98.

The women led the way for the Pac-10 with eight NCAA titles, with the men contributing three crowns. UCLA won four NCAA championships, more than any school in the nation, with the titles coming in softball, women's track and field, women's gymnastics and women's golf. Stanford (women's tennis and men's and women's cross country) and USC (women's volleyball and men's and women's water polo) had three titles, and California contributed one (men's golf). In addition, Stanford won its 10th consecutive United States Sports Academy Directors' Cup, with UCLA finishing third, and Washington, California, Arizona, Arizona State and USC all in the top 20.
