Experience:
13th Year

Joe Wells was named Oregon State's 15th head wrestling coach in April, 1992. In 12 seasons, he's become one of the most successful ever in that position. Since coming to Corvallis, Wells has two Pacific-10 Coach of the Year awards and four top-10 team finishes at the NCAA Championships, including a runner-up trophy in 1995. His Beaver squads have included a two-time national champion, 17 All-Americans, and 22 conference champions. Wells, 57, arrived at Oregon State after 17 seasons as an assistant at Iowa and Michigan. In his first year at OSU, he led the Beavers to second place in the Pacific-10 Championships and a top-20 finish at the NCAAs. In 1994, the Beavers won their first conference title under Wells and placed fourth at the NCAAs; the next season, the Beavers took second, tying their highest-ever finish at the national meet. Wells guided the Beavers to their third straight top 10 finish at the NCAAs with an eighth-place finish in 1996, and the Beavers were back in the top 10 in 1998 when they tied for ninth place. Known for his approachable style, Wells is a tutor who likes to involve all his wrestlers when it comes to decisions on and off the mat. His style makes no room for slackers when it comes to hustle, hard work and dedication. The 1976 USWF National Freestyle Champion is capable of throwing you to the mat, but a more likely welcome is a friendly handshake. Wells has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, including the 1988 Olympic Team. At Michigan, he was named NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year in 1988. Wells was also an assistant coach on Iowa's national champions in 1973 and 1976. As a collegiate wrestler, Wells was a two-time placer in the Big Ten Championships. He was also a silver medalist in the 1974 USSR National Championships in Tiblisi, Russia. Wells earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Iowa. He and his wife, Cindia, have a daughter, Kalli (15), and a son, Garrett (12).
