2004: Joe appears to be the heir-apparent to three-year starter Tim Euhus, a first team All-Pac-10 selection...the prototype tight end...the coaching staff expects no drop in production at the position with Newton as the starter...excellent hands and a good blocker...a future postseason honors candidate...he snagged 13 passes as a redshirt-freshman and is the second-leading pass receiver returning to the program...caught nine passes for 53 yards and three touchdowns in the spring scrimmages.

2003: Joe played in all 13 games as a redshirt-freshman... had 13 receptions for the season for 155 yards...he scored a key touchdown on a 40-yard pass from Derek Anderson in the victory over Boise State...made his first career reception against Sacramento State...caught five passes for 40 yards in the team's victory at California.

2002: Redshirt.

ROSEBURG: Parade Magazine All-American...first team Long Beach Press-Telegram Best in the West list after his senior season, receiving seven of the possible 10 votes for the team - the highest total ever by a prep player from Oregon at that a senior he caught 21 passes for 298 yards and four touchdowns in nine games for head coach Thurman Bell, a starter on the 1965 OSU Rose Bowl team...for his offensive prep career he had 68 receptions for 1,019 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns...Tacoma News-Tribune Northwest Nugget Team member...SuperPrep Magazine rated him the top football player in the state, and Student Sports Magazine selected him among its top 10 tight ends in the nation...the Roseburg News-Review named him to its All-Century team...first team all-state on offense and defense...he played defensive tackle and was named the Defensive Player of the Year for the Southern Oregon Conference...also was a standout in basketball and track...he won the 4A state discus title as a senior with a toss of 178-10, which was more than 17 feet better than the second-place all-league performer in basketball after averaging 18 points as a January of 2002 his football jersey (No. 87) was retired by Roseburg HS.

PERSONAL: Born in Roseburg, Oregon...son of Daniel and Kathrine Newton...Daniel works in the forest industry...has two sisters, Trisha and Jessie...entered OSU with a 3.73 GPA out of Roseburg High School...Michael Jordan is his favorite athlete...selected OSU because of its "academics and athletics"...majoring in forestry.
