Oregon needed a fourth-quarter comeback to win its last game. With Idaho visiting Autzen Stadium on Saturday, the 13th-ranked Ducks wouldn't figure to need any late rallies. Entering the final quarter trailing Fresno State 24-15 on Saturday, the Ducks (2-0) scored 13 unanswered points and escaped with a 28-24 victory. Junior quarterback Jason Fife engineered a 16-play, 70-yard drive that was capped by Onterrio Smith's two-yard touchdown run with 5:31 remaining. After Fresno State failed to capitalize on Fife's fumble with less than five minutes to go, the Oregon quarterback moved the Ducks 43 yards in four plays and Smith put the Ducks ahead for good with another two-yard TD run. Fife, making just his second career start, completed 19-of-34 passes for 303 yards and a touchdown, while Smith carried 35 times for 124 yards and two TDs. "I'd like to never have to rally, but now that we did, it makes them understand and believe that if it happens again, we're more confident than we were before," Oregon coach Mike Bellotti said. "But, once is enough for me." The win was Oregon's 27th in its last 28 home games with the only blemish during that span a 49-42 loss to Stanford on Oct. 20, 2001. Saturday's meeting will be the 57th between Oregon and Idaho, but only the fourth since 1970. The Ducks lead the series, 49-3-4, including 21 straight wins since a 14-0 loss on Oct. 7, 1950. Idaho is allowing 236 rushing yards through two games, possibly setting Smith up for a big day. Smith, the first sophomore in school history to rush for over 1,000 yards in 2001, has run for 124 yards in each of the first two games this season. The Vandals (0-2) opened their season with a 38-21 loss to Boise State on Aug. 31, and allowed seven sacks in a 49-14 loss to No. 11 Washington State on Saturday. "We got dominated on the line of scrimmage. Period. End of story," Idaho coach Tom Cable said. Brian Lindgren was one of the few positives in the defeat, as he completed 33-of-49 passes for 267 yards and two TDs. Idaho's top offensive weapon is senior receiver Josh Jelmberg, who has 20 receptions for 146 yards and two TDs this season. |
