Lady Rebels Set To Face Kansas In First Round WNIT Game

The Lady Rebels (16-13, 5-9 SEC) will travel to Lawrence, Kan., on Sunday, March 19 to take on the Kansas Jayhawks (17-12, 5-11 Big 12) in a first round Women's NIT game. Ole Miss is playing in the WNIT for the third time in school history and will be searching for its first WNIT win. The Jayhawks defeated Northern Iowa, 59-49, on Thursday in a prelimary round game to advance to Sunday's game, which will be played in Allen Fieldhouse at 6 p.m.

Ole Miss is led on the season by junior All-SEC First Team member Armintie Price with 16.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Price was recently named a finalist for the 2006 WBCA/Kodak All-America Team.

Sophomore forward Carla Bartee has been Ole Miss' top player off the bench with 9.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per outing, although she has started four games on the season. Bartee has posted double figures in seven of the last nine games and tied a career-high with 21 points in Ole Miss' win over Arkansas in the first round of the 2006 SEC Tournament.

Junior guard Ashley Awkward had a strong showing at the SEC Tournament. Awkward averaged 16.0 points 6.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists in Ole Miss' two games, including a career-high 19 points vs. LSU.

Freshman center Shawn Goff has been coming on strong as of late. Goff, who has started the last four games, has averaged 6.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in the last seven games. Goff has also tallied 13 blocks, seven steals and six assists in those seven outings.
 

 

Senior guard Ashley Johnson is Ole Miss' other player in double figures with 11.2 per game. Johnson leads Ole Miss with 57 three-point baskets on the season and made 9-of-15 from beyond the arc in the Lady Rebel's two games at the SEC Tournament. Johnson turned in 20.0 points per game in North Little Rock.

Under the direction of third-year head coach Carol Ross, the Lady Rebels are 52-38. Ross, who played at Ole Miss from 1979-82, needs just one win to reach the 300 plateau as she has posted a 299-159 career mark in 15 seasons.

The Kansas women's basketball team (17-12, 5-11 Big 12) has been selected to play in the postseason WNIT for the third time in school history. The Jayhawks defeated Northern Iowa 59-49 on Thursday. The postseason appearance is Kansas' first since 2000 and 17th in school history.

The Jayhawks enter the postseason led by seniors Crystal Kemp, Erica Hallman and Kaylee Brown who are all having their finest seasons in a Jayhawk uniform. Kemp ranks 22nd in the country with an average of 18.8 points per game to go with 8.3 boards per contest. Hallman is second in scoring with 14.2 points per game and leads the team with 58 three-pointers made. Brown averages 11.3 points per outing while knocking down 55 treys.

Jayhawk head coach Bonnie Henrickson is 29-28 in her second year at Kansas and 187-90 in her ninth season overall.
