April 27, 2003

NORFOLK, VA (April 27, 2003) -- Top seeded Old Dominion fell to James Madison on Sunday at Foreman Field in the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Women's Lacrosse Championship game.

The Dukes capture their fourth CAA women's lacrosse championship, also winning the title game in 1997, 1999, and 2001. The victory also gives James Madison an automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Tournament as they up their mark to 13-5 overall. The Lady Monarchs, who had advanced to their second straight CAA final, fall to 12-4 overall and will wait until Sunday night to see if they will receive an at-large bid to their first ever NCAA appearance.

Seven different Duke players scored in the victory led by midfielders junior Gail Decker (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Carrie Martell (Glastonbury, CT) with three goals apiece. Lisa Staedt, Johanna Buchholz (Fairfax, VA), Beth Davis (Millersville, MD), Jessica Brownridge (Whitby, Ontario), and Megan Hannum (Nottingham, PA) also reached the back of the Old Dominion net in the victory.

Old Dominion was led by the seven-point effort of junior midfielder Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) with a game-high four goals and three assists. Sophomore attack Melody Shotwell (Fairfax Station, VA) added three goals and an assist, while midfielders senior Danielle Hensil (Havertown, PA) and junior Molly Coane (Bay Shore, NY) rounded out the Lady Monarch scoring with one goal apiece.

James Madison jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the game off of one of Decker's three goals on the afternoon. However, the Lady Monarchs would not trail long as seconds later Shotwell found the back of the net to tie the score up 1-1 with 27:12 remaining in the opening half. Neither team scored over the next 12 minutes until Martell's first tally of the game with 15:53 left in the first half sparked a 3-0 run and gave the Dukes the lead for good. James Madison entered the half up 6-3.

The Dukes scored three unanswered goals within the first ten minutes of the second half, increasing their lead to 9-3. Old Dominion did not back way though scoring four unanswered goals of their own to cut their deficit to two, 9-7, with 15:35 to go. Wosczyna had a hand in all four of those goals assisting on the first three and scoring on a free position shot on the fourth. Martell's third and final goal of the afternoon at the 11:49 mark proved to be the game-winner as James Madison pushed its lead back up to three, 10-7.

The Dukes had an 11-8 advantage in the closing minutes as Wosczyna scored the Lady Monarchs' third straight goal once again brining Old Dominion within two, 11-9, with 6:47 left on the clock, but each team's defense would keep the ball out of both nets the rest of the way.

Lady Monarch netminder freshman Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) posted 10 saves in the loss, while Livvy King (Cockeysville, MD) and Amy Altig (Millersville, MD) combined for five saves in the Duke net.

Staedt led James Madison with four draw controls and was one of eight Dukes with two groundballs. Defenders junior Jessica Beard (Davidsonville, MD) and sophomore Ashlee Dardine (Broomall, PA) each recorded three caused turnovers for the Dukes. The Lady Monarchs' defensive efforts were led by Wosczyna's three caused turnovers and four groundballs. Hensil also collected four groundballs for Old Dominion, while Shotwell led the squad with four draw controls.

Members of the CAA All-Tournament Team included Hofstra's Kathleen Mikowski (New Hyde Park, NY), and Lisa Papa (Tampa, FL), George Mason's Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD), and Stacy Berger (Baltimore, MD), Old Dominion's Suzanne Wosczyna, Danielle Hensil, and Michelle Gannon, and James Madison's Carrie Martell, Gail Decker, Jessica Beard , Ashlee Dardine, and Tournament MVP Lisa Staedt.
