WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- Senior midfielder Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, PA) scored the game's final three goals including the game-winner with 11 seconds remaining as the Old Dominion women's lacrosse team snapped an eight game losing streak with a 13-12 victory over conference rival #17 William & Mary on Wednesday evening at Busch Field.

For the second time in three games, the William and Mary women's lacrosse squad suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the waning seconds of regulation as they fell to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in the CAA. The victory gave Old Dominion's its first win since a 17-4 win over Lafayette back on March 28th. The Lady Monarchs improved to 4-11 overall and picked up its first CAA win of the season, closing out conference play 1-6.
 

 

Wosczyna, ODU's all-time leading scorer, ended the game with nine total points (four goals, five assists). Senior attacker Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD) added in a hat-trick with three tallies, while freshman Caroline Jacobs (Gaithersburg, MD) and senior midfielder Molly Coane (Bayshore, NY) each netted a pair. Sophomore Tameka Davis (Washington, D.C.) came off the bench to start the late Lady Monarch rally to put away her first career goal, while senior midfieler Erin Lindsey (Audubon, PA) also added in a goal in the victory.

William & Mary used a pair of goals from junior attacker Morgan Watkins to build a 5-2 lead over the first 15 minutes of play, but the Lady Monarchs bounced back and eventually whittled the lead to a single goal at 6-5 when Jacobs scored with 1:07 remaining. William & Mary pushed its lead back to a two-goal cushion when Watkinsfound Laura Nolan's with 30 seconds remaining, put sent the Tribe to the half with a 7-5 lead.

Coming out of the break, the Monarchs used a pair of scores from Rodriquez over the first five minutes to even score at seven all. Watkins quickly restored the lead back to the Tribe, less than a minute later with an unassisted score and William & Mary's Laurice Rutledge extended the lead with a success just 20 seconds later to put the Tribe up 9-7 with 24:10 remaining.

After an Jacobs found the back of the Tribe net for the second time on the evening, William & Mary answered back with two unanswered goals to take a 11-8 lead with 9:02 remaining, their largest margin of the night. However, the Old Dominion offense came storming back to net five of the game's next six goals for the come from behind victory. Davis sparked the Lady Monarchs' scoring barrage at the 8:30 mark with a point blank shot on net to cut the deficit to 11-9 and from there Wosczyna took over the remainder of the game as she scored her first of four consecutive goals for ODU with 7:30 remaining. Tribe senior attacker Kelly McQuade temporarily restored the Tribe two-goal margin with 4:04 remaining, however Wosczyna's scoring session did not end as she scored the games final three goals, starting with one at the 2:51 mark. She tied the game with 46 seconds and scored the game-winner with 11 ticks left on the clock about 20 seconds after the Lady Monarchs collected the final draw.

William and Mary outshot ODU, 28-22, and won the battle of ground balls, 23-22, but the Lady Monarchs won the battle of the draws controls, 14-13.

The Tribe was lead by a five-point effort by Watkins. Junior defender Becca Hall led the defenders by gathering six ground balls and four caused turnovers for the Tribe.

Old Dominion goalkeeper Michelle Gannon (Delmar, MD) made nine saves in net and also collected a team-high nine groundballs.

The Lady Monarchs will close out the 2004 campaign when they renew their rivalry with Rutgers on Tuesday, April 27 at 3:00 p.m.
